The clinical effect of ketotiten in cildhood asthma

Abstract
Ketotifen is a oral prophylactic anti-allergic agent which has anti-histmaminic characteristics.
Previous controlled clinical trials with this agent have established that ketotifen has significant prophylactic and drug sparing effect in childhood asthma.
A retrograde clinical evaluation was made in eighty three asthma children in the view point of the effect long term of ketotifen.

The results were as follows :
1. Among the 83 asthma children, 60 patients were male and 23 patients were female. The sex ratio was 2.6: 1(M : F).
2. The mean age of the patients was 4.9 years old. The mean asthmatic symptom duration was 2.5 years.
3. More than half(55.4%) of the patients had their onset of asthma before 3 years of age.
4. The majority of the patients¢¥ degree of asthma was moderate(54.2%) to severe(43.40/) and most of them were perennial type but, some showed seasonal aggravations.
5. Serum IgE level was high(591 N/m) in 43(60. 6%) patients.
6. The mean duration of ketotifen treatment was 1.0.2 months and the overall efficacy of the drug was 683%.
7. Among the patients who had clinical benefits with ketotifen, 52.6% responded in 4 weeks, 75.4% in 8 weeks and 96.5% in 12 weeks. One patient showed improvement in 24 weeks.
8. The efficacy of ketotifen was more evident in younger (less than 5years old) and milder cases.
9. The sex and serum IgE level had no influence: on the ketotifen efficacy.
10. Drowsiness and weight gain were noticed as side effects but, discontinuation of the drug was not needed.
